There are different kinds of urinary incontinence. Stress incontinence is the unintentional leakage of urine during sudden movements such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising.

Urge incontinence is the sudden, intense urge to urinate, followed by a loss of urine. You may feel frequent urges to urinate and often wake several times during the night with a strong urge to urinate.

Mixed incontinence is a combination of urge and stress incontinence. Treatment is dependent on which type you have.

Stress incontinence can affect women of all ages, and while common, it is not a normal part of aging. The most common cause of stress incontinence is weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and tissue. This can result from pregnancy and childbirth, chronic heavy lifting or straining, menopause or estrogen deficiency, or obesity. With urge incontinence, the bladder contracts and squeezes out urine involuntarily, often referred to as an “overactive bladder.”

After discussing your symptoms with one of our providers, an assessment may be performed and treatment options can be considered. Treatment options range from pelvic floor exercises to medications to surgery. If urinary incontinence is affecting your daily life, discuss your symptoms with your provider to see which option may work best for you.
